We launched a new series on the life of David this week, meeting him in 1 Samuel 16:1-13. The prophet Samuel was instructed by God to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as the next king of Israel. The firstborn son seemed to have it all together and looked like the obvious choice. But Samuel was told by God, “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (verse 16). David’s seven older brothers were all bypassed, while initially David wasn’t even included in the ceremony.
In our culture, we too get caught up in focusing on outward, tangible abilities and accomplishments, and often forget to remember what matters most to God: the heart.
Questions to Consider:
In what ways do you tend to forget about the heart?
- In what ways do you personally obsess over external appearance?
- How do you tend to evaluate others based on their outward appearance?
