In this sermon, Pastor Doug uses the Celtic metaphor of a "wild goose" to describe the untamed, unpredictable nature of the Holy Spirit. He addresses the tension that while the Spirit permanently dwells within every believer, scripture simultaneously commands Christians to "keep on being filled" over and over again. This continuous filling is not about gaining the Holy Spirit for the first time, but about maintaining an ongoing posture of daily surrender and listening. In the books of Acts, we see the earliest disciples continuing to build a relationship with the Holy Spirit and experience numerous fillings of the Spirit to find renewed courage and power.
The ultimate goal of this continuous filling is not to chase emotional or physical manifestations, although they are real, but to personally experience the depth of God's love through relationship. Using a visual demonstration of jars and rocks, he illustrates that our hearts can become too crowded with control, fear, and resentment to receive God's presence. Ultimately, being continuously filled requires us to regularly ask the Holy Spirit to remove these internal barriers so that there is always room for His love to pour in.
