From Sinner to Saint // DiscipleSHIFT // Doug Glynn // 01.25.26

Preacher: Doug Glynn Series: DiscipleSHIFT Topic: discipleship, Identity Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1, Romans 4–6, 1 Timothy 1, Ephesians 1, 2 Corinthians 5:17

In this week’s Disciple/Shift, we name a foundational move for disciples of Jesus: from the lens of “sinner” to the lens of “saint.” Not denial. Not pretending we do not sin. This is about identity. As the sermon puts it: “for believers, ‘sinner’ is not our name… ‘saint’ is.” And once that identity becomes the lens you live through, it reshapes everything: how you relate to God, how you handle failure, how you respond to conviction, and how you grow.

To ground it biblically, we look at how Paul speaks to the Corinthians, one of the messiest churches in the New Testament. Paul has plenty to confront, but he does not start with shame. He starts with identity: “sanctified… called to be saints.” The point is clear: identity first, then correction. Paul is not trying to shame them into change, he is calling them back to who they already are in Christ.

Then the sermon names a diagnostic question: “When you mess up, what is your reflex?” Do you hide, hustle, punish yourself, spiral, or do you move toward Jesus? That reflex reveals your lens. If the deepest truth is “I am a sinner,” you tend to relate to God like you are on probation. But if the deepest truth is “I am loved… forgiven… made new… a saint in progress,” you relate to God like a child who belongs. That is why this shift is good news: “Confession stops being a courtroom. It becomes a doorway… back into freedom.”

Finally, the sermon contrasts two operating systems: the way of the world (religious duty and sin management) versus the way of Jesus (grace and Spirit-led transformation). Sin management looks serious, but it is actually arrogant because it assumes we can handle sin through effort, discipline, punishment, or penance. Grace is what truly takes sin seriously: sin is so powerful we need rescue, a Savior, a new heart, and the Holy Spirit within us.
