Why a Cross?

• This is not a sign of a winner. It’s the sign of death.
• This is not a sign of abundance. This is the sign of ultimate loss.
• This is not a sign of status. This is the ultimate expression of humiliation.

Why did the Romans use crucifixion?

1) to maximize the pain,

2) to maximize the public humiliation

“He who knew no sin became sin …”for our sake (2 Corinthians 5:21).

“That’s why for 2,000 years, at the center of the Christian faith stands not a candle, not a star, but a cross.” (John Ortberg)

And there is no Easter without the cross.
