THE LORD'S PRAYER
"What's In A Name?"
Pastor Scott Oas | 02.28.16
“This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name...” - Matthew 6:9
WHAT GOD’S NAMES TELL ME?
1. God wants to supply my needs.
“God is my Provider.” (“Jehovah-Jireh”) - Genesis 22:14
“God will supply all that you need from his glorious resources in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:19 (Ph)
“As you know Him better, God will give you, through His great power, everything you need for living a truly good life.” - 2 Peter 1:3 (LB)
My most urgent need: ______________________
2. God wants to relieve my stress.
“God is my Peace.” (“Jehovah-Shalom”) - Judges 6:24
“God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” - 1 Corinthians 14:33 (RSV)
(Jesus) “The peace I give you isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” - John 14:27 (LB)
My greatest stress: _________________________
3. God wants to heal my hurts.
“God is my Healer.” (“Jehovah-Rophe”) - Exodus 15:26
“God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” - Psalms 147:3
“When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!” - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (LB)
My deepest hurt: ___________________________
4. God wants to forgive my faults.
“God is my Righteousness.” (“Jehovah-Tsidkenu”) - Jeremiah 23:6

“All have sinned . . . yet God declares us 'not guilty’ of offending Him if we trust in Jesus Christ. . .” - Romans 3:23-24 (LB)
My worst fault: ____________________________
GOING DEEPER
SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 6:5-15
GETTING STARTED:
Talk about how you pray. Are you alone? With family? Do you have lists of requests? Praises? Do you use scripture?
Do you believe there is a right way or a wrong way to pray? Are there things you should not do when you pray?
A CLOSER LOOK:
We looked at 4 names for God.
1. "God is my provider." ("Jehovah-Jireh") - Genesis 22:14
Read Phil. 4:19. "God will supply all that you need from his glorious resources in Christ Jesus."
What do you believe it means when it says; “God will supply all that you need”?. How can scripture say that?
2. "God is my Peace" ("Jehovah-Shalom") - Judges 6:24
(Jesus) "The peace I give you isn't fragile like the peace the world gives. So don't be troubled or afraid." - John 14:27 (LB)
How can Jesus’ words here provide practical direction for us when we encounter stress in our lives? What is the difference between the peace of the world- what is that, and the peace of Christ?
3. "God is my Healer" ("Jehovah-Rophe") - Exodus 15:26
"God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." - Psalms 147:3
What does this verse tell us God does? What are the results of “brokenheartedness” if left unchecked?
What results when wounds are not bound up? What takes place in a person’s life when God acts as healer? Have you experienced that?
4. "God is my Righteousness." ("Jehovah-Tsidkenu") - Jeremiah 23:6
"I am the God who forgives your sins, and I do this because of who I am." - Isaiah 43:25 (GN)
"All have sinned . . . yet God declares us 'not guilty' of offending Him if we trust in Jesus Christ. . ." - Romans 3:23-24 (LB)
What is forgiveness? How does it work? Who does it? Who receives it? What takes place when it is enacted? How does one live into it?
DIGGING DEEPER:
What does the word “hallowed mean (v.9)? What are we praying to hallow? How can we “hallow” God’s name in our own lives?
Of the four names of God above (provider, peace, healer and righteousness) which one is most on your heart right now? How can you draw strength from this name to be reminded that God has your life in His hands?
