A Potentially Disruptive Re-entry System

I have a close friend who is a very unique individual (you know who you are!). He is an Irish (not Swedish Covenant pastor and an accomplished writer and artist. He doesn’t drink coffee or play golf; he watches “The Simpson’s,” listens to the Rolling Stones and is a war-and weapons buff. Several years ago, he and I visited Gettysburg where he regaled me about the weapons used in the 1860’s. That led us to a discussion about modern day weaponry and one of the newest weapons in the U.S. arsenal: the 9 mega-ton warhead known as the Titan-II missile. He described it in detail, but what intrigued me most was the official military language used for this weapon: “A POTENTIALLY DISRUPTIVE RE-ENTRY SYSTEM.”

Boy, I’ll say! I might have called it the “Big Kaboom,” but in typical government fashion, it was both understated and coded at the same time. I mean, that bomb would literally flatten Chandler in a nano-second.

Even though that title seems silly in referring to a bomb of that magnitude, it is a wonderful description of what happened more than 2000 years ago when Jesus, who was crucified, dead and buried, and who, by the way, was sealed in a tomb with a 4 ton stone blocking the entrance, reentered life after being dead for 3 days. Now that was a POTENTIALLY DISRUPTIVE RE-ENTRY SYSTEM! In fact, more correctly, it was an absolutely disruptive re-entry system! It changed everything.

It changed the world dramatically by changing how we think, feel and believe. It changed how we mark our calendars. It changed religion, architecture, science, history and governments. It changed hospitals, schools, orphanages and institutions of higher education. The resurrection of Jesus changed the lives of the 3 women who discovered the empty grave, the disciples who followed Him, the 500 adherents of the faith and the multiplied millions of people who testify to a changed life because of this disruptive re-entry system we refer to as Easter. And by the way, it has completely changed my life and I’m sure many of your lives as well. No one can deny the effect Jesus’ victory over death had on every area of human history and human life. Everything has changed.

This Easter, I would like to ask you to consider whether or not you would like your life disrupted. Are you feeling empty, lonely or distraught? Are you wondering if there is something more to life or if there is even a purpose, a plan, a reason to live? Are you wondering if one can live life abundantly?

The resurrection of Jesus Christ answers these questions. My prayer for each of you this Easter season is that you will be turned upside down by the power of Jesus’ resurrection, and that you will be changed forever by the POTENTIALLY DISRUPTIVE RE-ENTRY SYSTEM.

That is Christ alive in this world and in your life.

“To them God has chosen to make known among (you) the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27
